New figures published early January by the National Energy System Operator (Neso) showed wind has become Britain’s first electricity source in 2024, with nearly 83TWh of electricity generated by wind across Great Britain last year, up from nearly 79TWh in 2023.
According to the National Energy System Operator (NESO), electricity generation in Britain in 2024 was distributed as follows:
- Wind: 30%
- Gas: 26.3%
- Imports: 14.1%
- Nuclear: 14%
- Biomass: 6.8%
- Solar: 5%
- Hydro: 2%
- Storage: 1.2%
- Coal: 0.6%
