Nigeria is experiencing severe power outage occurrences across the country since October 19th. More than a third of the country’s 36 states have been plunged in darkness after a major transmission grid issue.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) indicated “the recent escalating incidence of grid disturbances is often leading to marked outage in several states, thus reversing many of the gains recently achieved in reducing infrastructure deficit and improving grid stability.”
On its part, Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu blamed outdated infrastructure for the incessant collapse of the national grid. The World Bank reported in 2021 that 85 million Nigerians are lacking access to grid electricity, representing 43 % of the population.
