US power use to reach record highs as energy storage installations rapidly grow

The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates in its latest Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO) that US power consumption is on track to rise to new records in the coming months, to 4,101 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in 2024 and 4,185 billion kWh in 2025.

In this context, a report from the American Clean Power Association and Wood Mackenzie has revealed US energy storage installations had risen by 62% in the second quarter of 2024, to 2.9 GW. Developers have commissioned 33 energy storage projects across 10 states from April to June 2024 according to the report, with California adding the most capacity of any state with 1,353 MW/5,397MWh of newly energized battery storage, and accounting for 46% of installed U.S. storage capacity.
