Egyptian EETC signs MoUs for new solar & wind projects

Egypt has signed two deals to add 5.2 GW of renewable energy capacity in the country on the sidelines of COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The first deal has been signed between the Ministry of Electricity and a consortium of the UAE’s TAQA and France’s Voltalia to permit the repowering of the Zafarana wind farm, located 130 km southeast of Cairo, by 2028. It is due to combine 2.1 GW of solar with 1.1 GW of wind, making it the first project in Egypt to merge both renewable energy sources.

The second deal joins the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA), and Alcazar Energy Partners for a wind project with a total capacity of 2 GW. Once commissioned, the wind project is expected to supply 1.3 million Egyptian households.
