Brazil new transmission lines enable renewables’ transfers with increased reliability
With three new transmission lines and one more substation, ONS transmission capacity from the Northeast of Brazil reaches 13,000 MW, reducing generation restrictions.
The general director of GO15 member ONS, Marcio Rea, announced that the exchange limits in the Northeast area have been expanded towards the Southeast/Central-West and North, thus increasing the use of wind and solar generation and, consequently, reducing generation restrictions from these sources.
The amount exported from the Northeast to the North could be increased by almost 30%, rising from 4,800 MW to 6,200 MW. This percentage will represent an advance in the use of wind and solar energy, returning to the volumes of energy exported prior to the event of August 15, 2023, with safety and reliability.
“The expansion of the transmission lines is in line with the strategy of increasing the transfer of energy from the Northeast, the largest producer of clean energy in the country, to the other subsystems, particularly to the load center that is the Southeast. It is a win-win situation. The national system gains in terms of energy security and society benefits from having a more efficient process, in constant evolution and increasingly supported by renewable sources”, says Marcio Rea, general director of the ONS.
