British regulator confirms funding plan for a new Anglo-Scottish electricity link

The new Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2), linking Yorkshire to Scotland, is the first of 26 projects to complete a fast-track process to secure funding through Ofgem’s new ASTI framework.

A £3.4 billion funding package has been awarded to build this 2GW high voltage “electricity highway”, through a proposed new subsea and underground 500km cable, forecasted to power up to 2million homes. Two converter stations, one at each end of the cable, are planned to help feed the electricity transported by the cable into the grid and from there onto consumers.

This project is set to help deliver the Government’s goal of clean power by 2030 and reduce the UK’s reliance on volatile international gas markets.
