Dutch power grid operator TenneT has installed new sensors in its high-voltage lines that make it possible to measure the temperature and ‘sag’ of these lines. Using the weather data, the national grid operator can then transmit more power than the lines are designed for in favorable weather conditions.
Such sensors have for instance been installed on the 380 kV (kilovolt) link between Geertruidenberg and Eindhoven and this solution provides up to 30 % extra transmission capacity across the entire grid.
